Flying Geese Cutting Chart
Cut sizes for common flying geese units with the no-waste and stitch-and-flip methods.
Sizes are for the classic 2:1 goose (height is half the width). No-waste: one large square and four small squares make four geese.

How the chart is calculated
- No-waste: large square = finished width + 1¼"; small squares = finished height + 7/8".
- Stitch-and-flip: rectangle = (width + ½") × (height + ½"); squares = height + ½", two per goose.
For other proportions and yardage, use the flying geese calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What size squares for 4 × 2 flying geese?
No-waste method: one 5¼" square and four 2 7/8" squares make four geese. Stitch-and-flip: 4½" × 2½" rectangles and 2½" squares.
Can I trim no-waste flying geese?
Yes. Add about ¼" more to both square sizes and trim each goose to the unfinished size in the last column.
